Last Thursday Rod Wheelans described a method for sharpening images using a combination of unsharp mask and a high pass filter. Unfortunately I didn't write it down. Did anyone else, or is anyone else familiar with it?

The truth is it did a bit more than just sharpen the image, it enhanced the midtone contrast and made the image as a whole look alot more punchy.

I think it went something lke this:
  • adjust levels as normal
  • duplicate base layer, and apply an unsharp mask cant remember the exact ratio, I think it was something like amount 50% / radius 20
  • duplicate this layer? and then apply a high pass filter radius 10-20 pixels
  • change this layer's blend mode to overlay/soft light ?

I'm really not sure what the correct method is but the above is an approximation. I anyone can set me straight that would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Rob
