A question popped into my head after all the discussion about competitions.  It's simply this - if no one else ever saw your pictures, would you still take them?

I find I smile when I look back at my photos, so I would say yes.

Maybe, but would they be as good? Do we not strive to impress? From the basic; Let me show you our holiday snaps (OH HELP!) to those impressive four letters - FRPS (OH HELP!)

I get a real buzz from producing a quality image,  by that I mean one that I feel has something that goes a good way to being what I saw in my head before I even pressed the button. Then I want to show it to people! If competitions are one way then fine, as for winning that's a lottery.

Well, I'm pretty much isolated in my photographic journey and very few people actually see my images, although some do, so I suppose I have to count them. If they didn't however, I would certainly keep taking them.
I pretty much use my pics (the better ones) as desktop pictures for my computer monitor. They bring back memories, or just make me proud to have caught a moment, angle, light etc. that I personally strive for every time I go out with my camera.
Photography is not just about clicking the shutter or running a print for me either, it's about taking time out, breathing fresh air, slowing down and observing my surroundings, feeling a place and suspending reality for a while, losing myself in the sunset, sunrise, landscape, or even just my own garden.
I even have undeveloped films from times when I went shooting for the love of it, but couldn't then afford to get the films processed (really must get round to that!).
I'm not interested in selling or winning competitions, I just find photography very therapeutic indeed. The times I go out with my camera are when I really see the world around me and I do all that for me, not for others.

Good question JoeG! Hadn't given it a thought but now you mention it I realise I must have a giant ego! In part at least it's the opinion of others that spurs me on. I am sold on the Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hour theory of excellence and do pack in a lot of photography. How do you know how you're doing without feedback?

Yes I would as no one ever does see them.
