The Story Behind the Picture     "Isaac's Field"

Back to list

For some considerable time Joe has been producing superb, much admired photographs. The pedigree of Isaac’s Field so far is that it received a diploma at the Limours International and has had acceptances in Canada, Serbia and Turkey as well as the recent Wrekin and Smethwick salons.

“This small white barn occupies a corner of a field on a farm near Barnard Castle.  There is no public access to it, but I know the farmer well and have taken pictures here on several occasions. The field is known as Isaac’s Field for reasons that are now lost in the mist of time, but presumably Isaac was the farmer here many years ago.

Harvesting had just finished and all that was left of the crop of wheat was a relatively narrow strip which led up to the barn on one side of the field; the wheat was due to be ploughed-in a day or two later.  This meant I was able to move around the area to shoot the barn from a variety of angles without having to worry about trampling the crop and I ended up taking shots from maybe a dozen positions.

It was a fairly dull day so I used a tripod and tried to keep the barn at the top of the picture as the wheat made such a dramatic foreground.  For each shot I set the camera to auto-bracket (three exposures at 2 stop intervals) as I intended to process for HDR.  There was no filtration.

HDR processing was done in Photomatix and the image was completed (edge darkening and control of the barn highlights) in Photoshop.  Pentax K10D, f9.5.”
