MY PHOTOGRAPHY

Mostly, reportage, documentary, environmental portraiture, but I also enjoy other genres. I particularly have a love for black and white photography but not exclusively so!

THE  BIGGEST INFLUENCE

Looking at exhibitions (Locally, the Side Gallery in Newcastle is a particular joy) and my large collection of photographic books.

MY FIRST CAMERA

Kodak 616 folder aged nine or so.

MY FAVOURITE CURRENT KIT

A Leica M6, a Rolleiflex and, more recently, a Pentax K7 digital SLR.

MY FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHERS

I am an admirer of Eugene Smith, Paul Strand, Salgado, Doisneau and many others

ME AND THE DPS

I can’t remember when I joined...some time ago!!  I won the Valente trophy a bit, also the Pinkney Cigarette box from Northern Counties in 1996. I was the first recipient of the Vice President’s Award ... for just failing to win things but trying hard!!

THE THINGS I ENJOY MOST BEING A MEMBER OF THE DPS

The company of like -minded and helpful people, the friendly atmosphere and a very good programme. I enjoy the portfolios and also
do a postal one with the RPS.

AN AMBITION

Maybe an FRPS.

THE PEARL (Advice to budding photographers)

Don’t try to produce images “to win”, follow your own interests and a personal style will develop.  Look at as many exhibitions as possible.
