Roy Hurst was born in 1947 and has lived in Seaham all his life. He is married to Norma. Now retired, he was a motor vehicle technician for more than 40 years and also worked with another Durham Photographic Society member, Stephen Bell, for 20 years He was a member of Seaham Photographic Society (sadly no more) for over 30 years, but out of the bad came the good - a move to the Durham club. Roy has found it good for his photography and finds the members very friendly and helpful in all things photography and more.

MY PHOTOGRAPHY

My interest is in all kinds of pictures that are in front of the camera at the time. The North East is enjoyable even if the weather is changeable. I like reflections, small bits of pictures, close up’s etc .  But I do also enjoy landscape photography. The Lake District in particular is a wonderful place for pictures.

THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE

It has to be the members of Seaham PS and the two Brians (Angus and Snowball). Here at Durham all the many lectures and talks from the guests and the members have also been an inspiration to me. Not a week goes past without learning something new on a Thursday night.

MY FIRST CAMERA

A Zenith B and a 50mm lens, all manual. No meter or battery to think about - a good start in photography.

MY FAVOURITE CURRENT KIT

Canon 40D with lenses 10-24 mm, 90mm macro, and of course my 80-200 f4 white lens what a wonderful bit of kit.

MY FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHERS

The pictures more than the photographers, but I do like Joe Cornish and David Noton. I have books from both of them and they are well thumbed.

ME AND THE DPS

I joined in 2006. I still enter the slide competitions, having been 1st in a couple of the monthly Progress competitions, but the digital imaging is taking over.

THE THINGS I ENJOY MOST BEING A MEMBER OF THE DPS

All the many guest photographers and members of DPS, NCPF, RPS and beyond who show and talk about their pictures. Being a member also gives me more access to events which enlarge my photography output. Durham is a very warm and friendly place to be on a Thursday night.

AMBITIONS (In photography)

To always be in the right place and the right time for all of my photography (doubtful but you have to try). More importantly just to enjoy my photography even more.

THE PEARL (Advice to budding photographers)

Go out more and take more and more and more pictures. If someone else likes them so much the better but keep on taking pictures you like and, above all, ENJOY IT …
